In addition to five regular academic classes, students take one period of an elective class. In the seventh grade, most students follow a wheel of four quarter-long classes, whereas in eighth grade, most electives last one semester. The seventh and eighth grade choices for the 2003/2004 school year are as follows:
ART (7,8) - Art class is a basic art course designed to introduce students to the basic skills and concempts involved in this discipline. Students will explore art by learning about and then applying these skills and ideas. No prior experience or talent is necessary to succeed.
AVID (8) - AVID is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is that all students, especially students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path:
- Will succeed in the most rigorous curriculum,
- Will enter mainstream activities of the school,
- Will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and
- Will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.
BAND (7,8) - This year-long class is open to all students with at least one year of experience. The band performs in several parades during the year as well as numerous concerts throughout the community. Each student must provide his own instrument and be committed to playing the assigned music which requires additional practice time at home. The Band meets during Zero period (8:00 to 8:45 a.m.) every day.
FOODS (8) - In this semester long "hands-on" class, students are introduced to the basics of kitchen safety, measurement and food preparation. As student skills increase, recipes will become more in-depth. Teamwork and following directions are an essential part of this fun class!
INDUSTRIAL ARTS (7) - Students participate in hands-on learning that promotes technical competence and career awareness using state-of-the-art modules in such areas as communications, manufacturing, robotics, electronics, engineering, air and space exploration, research and design, animation, lasers, digital photography, criminology, small gas engines, drafting and woodworking. Students participate in three modules during the quarter-long class. Safety is emphasized throughout the course.
ADVANCED INDUSTRIAL ARTS (8) - This is a semester long class that is open to both students new to Industrial Arts and to students who took Industrial Arts (7). The advanced course offers a similar learning experience discussed above for grade 7, with advanced modules offered in engineering, drafting and woodworking. Students will participate in seven modules during the semester.
HORTICULTURE (8) - This elective class provides students the opportunity to design and build a garden. The vegetable portion of the garden will help supply the cafeteria with fresh produce for our lunchtime salad bar.
HEALTH (7) - Health is one of the two required electives for seventh grade. This course will help guide students on how to maintain an equal balance of physical, mental, emotional, and social health throughout life.
KEYBOARDING (7) - Keyboarding is the second required elective for seventh graders. It is the goal of this class to provide students with the fundamentals of proper keyboarding skills.
PERFORMING ARTS (7,8) - This course is designed to introduce students to the basic skills and concepts of drama. Students will also explore music, song, rhythm, and choreography. Students will explore the discipline of drama and music by actively engaging in group projects that follow a sequential order of skill development. No prior experience or talent is necessary.
TEXTILES (7) - In this quarter long class, students will learn basic sewing techniques, use and care of the sewing machine, how to follow directions and complete an apron project.
SPANISH (8) - This class will introduce students to the study of the Spanish language, as well as acquaint them with the cultures of the Spanish speaking countries. Emphasis will be on vocabulary building and basic conversational Spanish.
TEACHERS ASSISTANT FOR THE STAFF (TA) (8) - These students will be responsible for helping the staff in a variety of ways, such as clerical work, assisting in lab preparation and clean-up and grading.
YEARBOOK (8) - The Lakeview yearbook is a student-designed publication created with state of the art digital technology. Students are responsible for photography, graphic layout, advertising, and sale of the yearbook. Our students learn to take pride in their creativity as well as the fundamentals of publication.
