Lakeview Physical Education

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.         When can I purchase a uniform for my child?

We sell uniforms the first 2-3 weeks of school everyday after school. The cost is $10 for the shirt and $10 for the shorts. However, a parent or student can buy a uniform at any time throughout the school year in the event that their uniform is lost or worn out, or they just want another one.

2.         What if I canÕt afford the Lakeview uniform?

If you cannot afford a Lakeview uniform, anything comparable will be acceptable. For example, any plain black or gray, t-shirt and/or shorts that the student may already have will work.

3.         Do students get graded for dressing out? Are there showers? Lockers?

Students are not graded for dressing out. Dressing out is for hygiene and fostering the team concept. It is not a means of assessing student performance in class. The consequence for not dressing out is a Demerit Detention. We do not have showers for students but each student will get their own locker to keep their clothes, deodorant, and other items for their hygiene. (NO AEROSOL hairsprays, deodorants, body sprays, etc are allowed in locker rooms).

4.         So, how will my child be graded in Physical Education and how much homework should my child expect?

Grading for Physical Education classes are weighted and separated into 3 categories. These categories are Mind (knowledge), Body (physical), and Character (social). There is also a written component in class that supplements what we do in class. Basically here are the criteria that we use to assess students in class:

á       Motivation in all activities

á       Positive leader or follower

á       Follows all instructions & stays on task

á       Respectful of others & equipment

á       Engaged in learning (listen & speak)

á       Work well with all in the class (not just friends.

Students will also evaluate themselves on this same criteria on a weekly basis through their Character Logs. TheyÕll use a scale 0-4 (4 being the highest) and students claim that filling out their Character Log takes Òlike 2 minutesÓ a night. Other assessments include: Fitness Logs (daily, alternate with Character Logs), Fitness Focuses (3 per quarter), Fitnessgram Tests (physical fitness tests mandated by the state that include: abdominal strength, flexibility, cardiovascular, upper body strength, and body composition), and projects (1-2 per year).

5.         With written work being included in PE now, how much time is actually spent on activity?

The majority of each class period is spent on activity. Of course, dressing out does take some time off of the beginning and end of each class (5-7 min on each end). In a 50 minute class period 30 Ð 40 minutes is spent on activity and in a 90 minute block period 60 Ð 70 minutes is spent on physical activity. Basically, the written component is done at home to supplement the activity we do in class.

6.         My kid has never been good at sports and he/she is really worried about PE. What should I tell him/her?

Tell your son or daughter not to worry. The days of Physical Education catering to athletics are gone. The purpose of our program is to instill in children the information and opportunities to live a healthy life beyond junior high school. In other words, both athletes and non-athletes can be successful in our program. Our goal while theyÕre here is that they start working towards a healthier level of fitness. Or, if they are already fit, that they maintain their current level of fitness and gain knowledge to improve themselves. Some of our units of instruction include: P.S.R. (social skills and problem solving activities), Personal Fitness, Team Sports, Dance, Self Defense, Recreation, and more.
