Periodic Table
Periodic Table
¥
The periodic
table was organized by a Russian scientist named Dmitri Mendeleev.
¥
He organized
the elements based on periodic, or repeating, chemical and physical properties.
Columns
¥
Columns of
elements are called groups or families and have similar
properties.
¥
These
properties are similar because they all have the same number of valence
electrons (electrons in their outer shell).
¥
Elements in
the the far right column, family or group 18, are called noble gasses.
¥
These gasses,
also called inert gasses, are very non-reactive with other elements.
Rows
¥
Rows of
elements are called periods and change from active metals on the left to
inactive gasses on the right.
¥
Elements in
the same row have the same number of electron shells.
Staircase
¥
Elements to
the left of the staircase are metals.
¥
Elements to
the right of the staircase are non-metals.
¥
Elements
next to the staircase line are called metalloids and have properties of
both metals and non-metals.
