Concentration

Concentration

á      concentration refers to the amount of material dissolved in a measure (volume) of liquid.

á      the more solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent, the more concentrated the solution.

á      the opposite of concentrated is diluted

Concentrated vs Dilute

á      solutions with a high ratio of solute to solvent are concentrated or strong (ex. 7:1 seven parts solute to 1 part solvent)

á      solutions with a low ratio of solute to solvent are dilute or weak (ex. 1:7 one part solute to 7 parts solvent)

Concentration vs Saturation

á      Concentration is a ratio of solute to solvent that can range 0% to 100% concentrated or more

á      Saturation describes a solution that is always 100% concentrated

Example:

if a solution is saturated, its concentration is 100% because no more solute will dissolve

if a solution is half saturated, its concentration is 50%
