PHYSICAL SCIENCE

Parent Information and Course Requirements

Physical Science is a year long 8th grade class. We will be learning about concepts and ideas that are somewhat different than you learned about in the 7th grade. Specifically, some of our topics will be measurement, physics, weather, chemistry, and astronomy. The philosophy behind the rules in this class is that you are here to learn. If you remember that, problems will be kept to a minimum.

1.     Internet access is not required, but strongly recommended. The school website address is LakeviewJHS.net. Click on Science to find notes which are posted before tests. Click on Homework to find weeekly assignments. On the Homework page you can sign up to be automatically notified by email whenever there is an assignment update.

2.     Teacher contact is best made by email. Parents can request grade and/or behavior updates. Progress reports can be emailed upon request. Mr. Cleveland's email address is: pcleveland@orcutt-schools.net. Mr. Cleveland's telephone number is: 938-8615.

3.     Student responsibility is to seek help and improve performance. Possible sources for help include the teacher, parent, friend, or tutor. If you do not understand the lesson, ask questions and seek help! Mr. Cleveland is available before school, at lunch, and after school. If you are absent it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out which notes and/or assignments you missed.

4.     Parent responsibility is to make sure that student responsibility is maintained, especially after a period of absence. Parents should check the website for assignments and make sure all work is completed. This includes ensuring that students are prepared for quizzes and tests.

5.     Materials you will need each day unless told otherwise include a pen/pencil, basic calculator, and notebook with paper. You will need flashcards. Your textbook will stay at home.

6.     Homework will be assigned most days. It will be corrected by the teacher, an aide, or in class and a point value will be assigned by the teacher. If the homework is incomplete, late (unexcused), missing, or messy, the student will receive a homework referral or demerit detention.

7.     Grades are posted every Monday. Grades are based on a combination of homework, projects, quizzes and tests. Test and quiz scores below 70% will require a parent signature.

8.     Discipline in the classroom will not spend valuable time with one or two students who do not want to learn at the expense of thirty who do. If you are having a problem with a classmate talk to the teacher. If you disturb others, talk back to the teacher, or cause any problems you will leave the classroom and/or receive a demerit detention.

9.     Safety is very important. The number of lab experiments we do depends on your safe, mature behavior. Never taste, throw, touch, or smell anything in the lab unless I tell you to. There is always a proper procedure to be followed.
