Weather Fronts

·      boundaries where two air masses meet that have different temperature and moisture

·      three types of fronts are cold, warm, and stationary

 

Cold Fronts

·      form when a mass of cold air moves under a mass of warm air

·      warm air is rapidly forced upwards creating giant cumulonimbus clouds, low barometer readings, and violent storms

·      hail and sleet can accompany these fronts

·      after the storm, the weather is usually cool and fair

 

Warm Fronts

·      form when a mass of warm air moves over a mass of cold air

·      produce a slow, gentle rain where the barometer falls and nimbostratus clouds form

·      after these storms the weather is usually hot and humid

 

Stationary Fronts

·      a stationary front forms when a mass of warm air and a mass of cold air meet but no movement occurs

·      slow rain may fall for many days during this condition
